PART 16: "The Choice"

Winter came quietly.
Snow fell over the estate, covering the garden, the stone wall, the paths Lily used to run barefoot across. Everything softened under white.
Inside, life continued.
Different now.
Stronger.
One night, during a heavy snowfall, the power went out.
The house went dark.
For a moment, there was silence.
Then James cried.
Lily called out.
And in the darkness, something old could have returned.
Fear.
Chaos.
Control.
But it didn’t.
Richard moved first—not with urgency, but with purpose.
“I’ve got it,” he said calmly.
He found the flashlight.
Checked on James.
Then Lily.
Then Catherine.
“All good,” he reassured them.
They gathered in the living room, wrapped in blankets, the fire casting a steady glow.
Lily leaned against him.
James slept in Catherine’s arms.
And as the storm raged outside, Richard sat there—not as the man he had been, but as the man he had chosen to become.
No one was afraid.
Not of the dark.
Not of him.

And that was the difference.
That was everything.
