A nine-year-old girl with a prosthetic leg limped into a crowded coffee shop in Bozeman, asking table after table if she could sit down. Everyone turned away
Chapter 1: The Call That Changed Everything
The storm outside worsened, but inside the Copper Hearth Café, something had shifted.
Sarah sat beside Lena, gently stirring the girl’s hot chocolate as if warmth alone could undo the damage written into her small body. Rex remained close, unmoving, his presence steady and protective.
Daniel stepped outside into the biting wind, phone pressed to his ear.
“Aaron, I need more than advice,” he said. “I need action.”
On the other end, Aaron Pike’s voice sharpened. “Already on it. I’ve got a contact in Gallatin County CPS. But listen carefully—if the aunt has legal custody, we need proof. Bruises alone won’t hold her long.”
Daniel glanced through the café window. Lena was laughing softly at something Sarah said—a fragile sound, like glass that could shatter.
“We’ll get proof,” Daniel said. “One way or another.”
Inside, Lena’s smile faded as the door suddenly creaked open again.
A woman stepped in.
Tall. Sharp features. Expensive coat.
Her eyes scanned the room—
—and locked onto Lena.
Lena froze.
“Aunt Carol…” she whispered.
Sarah’s hand tightened protectively around the girl’s shoulder.

From across the room, Rex was already on his feet.
And Daniel was already moving.
