Chapter 3 - The Girl No One Helped.

The sentence stayed on the screen for eleven seconds.

Nora counted because numbers were easier than belief.

Evelyn Hale did not die in the fire.

At twelve seconds the screen went black, leaving the ballroom full of people who suddenly had nowhere safe to look.

Nora heard her own voice before she decided to speak.

"Where is she?" No answer came from the speakers.

Celeste reached for Nora's arm.

Nora recoiled so sharply that Celeste's hand stopped in midair.

"If this is some performance your mother arranged—" "You told me she was unstable." Nora's voice shook.

"How did you know her well enough to say that?" Julian stepped between them.

"This is not the place." Nora looked around at the ballroom.

"You made it the place when you put her name on your wall." The engraved donor plaque on the east side included hundreds of contributors, but Evelyn's name was not among them.

What was there instead was the name of the Whitmore Community Housing Initiative, the program Evelyn had audited before her disappearance.

Julian's expression softened for the cameras.

"Miss Hale, you are injured and understandably emotional." Nora recognized the technique immediately.

He was making her reaction the problem.

"Do not call me emotional because your wife put me on the floor." Phones lifted higher.

The crowd that had ignored her pain now leaned forward for the confrontation.

Celeste hissed that the phones should be confiscated.

Julian told her to stop talking.

That terrified Celeste more than the screen had.

Two security officers returned from the control corridor with no Elias between them.

"Mr.

Gray's station is empty." Julian's face barely changed.

"Find him." One officer hesitated.

"His badge last scanned at the west service elevator seven minutes ago." Nora knew Elias had promised to stay in the building until her shift ended.

He had joked that rich people treated AV technicians like furniture until a microphone failed.

He had also told her, very seriously, that if she found anything connected to Evelyn, she should photograph it and leave immediately.

Now he was gone.

Nora slipped toward the service corridor while attention remained fixed on Julian.

She made it only ten steps before Iris Vale blocked her path.

The event director's smile had disappeared.

"You need medical attention." "I need my friend." "Mr.

Gray is not your concern." Nora stared at her.

"How do you know we're friends?" Iris paused.

Another answer hidden inside silence.

Nora moved around her.

Iris caught her wrist, then released it when Nora looked at the hand.

"You don't understand what this room is." "A room full of people who watched me get assaulted?" "A room full of people who can erase you by breakfast." Nora felt anger steady her.

"They tried that with my mother." She continued down the corridor.

Behind the ballroom walls, the mansion changed character.

Gold trim gave way to service doors, linen carts, security panels, and narrow staircases that existed so workers could move without disturbing guests.

Nora found Elias's AV station unlocked.

His headset lay on the console.

A half-finished coffee was still warm.

His phone was gone, but a small spiral notebook had been shoved under the mixing desk.

Nora opened it.

Most pages held cable numbers and audio cues.

On the last page, Elias had written four words in block capitals.

NOT ME.

CHECK CAMERA 12.

Nora's skin prickled.

He had known she might come looking.

A shadow moved at the far end of the corridor.

She closed the notebook.

The security chief, Martin Crowe, stepped through the door.

"Miss Hale." His tone was polite enough to be threatening.

"Mr.

Whitmore asked that all staff remain in the ballroom." "Why?" "For your safety." Nora glanced at the camera above him.

A small number twelve was printed beneath the lens.

Crowe followed her eyes.

That was the second mistake powerful people made around Nora that night.

They assumed fear made her stupid.

"What happened to Elias?" Crowe's expression stayed flat.

"He left." "His coffee is warm." "Then he left recently." "Without his headset?" Crowe stepped closer.

Nora backed toward the console.

The camera's red status light blinked once.

Then twice.

Crowe noticed it.

His hand went to his earpiece.

The ballroom speakers crackled beyond the wall.

The projection screen came alive again.

Nora could hear the guests react even from the service corridor.

A new video began playing.

It was Camera 12.

The footage showed Elias at his station four minutes earlier.

Martin Crowe entered the frame with two guards.

They took Elias by both arms.

Elias struggled.

Crowe covered his mouth.

Then the three men dragged him through a gray security door at the back of the corridor.

Nora looked at Crowe.

Crowe looked at the camera.

The distorted voice spoke through every ceiling speaker in the mansion.

"You should have helped the girl when you had the chance." For the first time, Martin Crowe looked afraid.

Then the gray security door behind Nora clicked open by itself.

In a staff washroom, Marissa cleaned Nora's cut while two younger servers whispered that they had seen Celeste humiliate workers at previous events.

Neither had reported it.

One needed health insurance through the catering company.

The other was supporting a younger brother.

Nora did not judge them.

Fear did not always look like cowardice; sometimes it looked like rent due on Friday.

What enraged her was how expertly the Whitmores had built a world in which decency carried a price ordinary workers had to calculate.

When Nora returned to the corridor, she saw three guests arguing about whether the footage had been edited.

No one was asking why a woman with so much power had believed she could do it in the first place.

Elias's notebook contained one more detail beneath CAMERA 12: 8:07 - relay opened.

Nora did not understand the notation yet, but she photographed it.

The time was one minute before the public broadcast began.

Whoever opened that relay had acted before Evelyn's ledger appeared and before Arthur entered the system.

A third hand was already inside the network.
