Chapter 2 - The Maid Becomes the Accused.

The police did not arrive that night.

Celeste wanted them called.

Adrian refused.

For Mara, that refusal felt less like mercy than delay.

He ordered the head of security to lock the medication room and collect every camera recording from the previous seventy-two hours.

Then he asked Mara to wait in the staff sitting room.

He did not call it detention.

The locked door did.

Mara sat beneath a framed watercolor of the mansion garden and replayed the raised finger in her mind.

Eleanor had been looking upward.

Not at Celeste.

The chandelier hung from a carved ceiling medallion three stories high.

There was nothing there except crystal, wiring, and an old brass maintenance ring.

At least that was what Mara had always believed.

Twenty minutes later, Adrian entered alone.

He closed the door behind him.

“Tell me everything from the beginning.”

Mara did.

She explained that Eleanor had refused an afternoon sedative because it made her dizzy.

She explained that Celeste arrived just after five carrying Eleanor's cane even though the cane had been stored in the upstairs therapy room.

She explained that Celeste demanded Eleanor sign a document.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“What document?”

“I couldn't see the heading.”

“What did Mother do?”

“She pushed it away.”

“And then?”

“Celeste told her she was making things harder for everyone.”

Adrian's face tightened.

“Exact words?”

“Almost exact.”

“Almost isn't exact.”

Mara looked at him.

“You are interrogating the wrong person.”

“I am interrogating the only person who had my mother's medication in her room.”

“It was planted.”

“By my wife?”

“Yes.”

The word came out without hesitation.

Adrian leaned back.

Mara expected anger.

Instead, he looked tired.

“Do you understand how serious that accusation is?”

“Do you understand how serious it is that she raised a cane over your mother?”

His gaze sharpened.

“You are sure she intended to strike her?”

“I am sure enough that I put myself between them.”

Adrian looked down at the floor.

For a moment, he appeared less like the ruthless company chairman people described in newspapers and more like a son who had arrived too late to understand his own home.

Then the door opened.

Celeste stepped in carrying a thin black folder.

“I found something else.”

Adrian's patience snapped.

“Stop finding things.”

Her eyes widened.

“What?”

“Every ten minutes you produce another piece of evidence.”

“Because I have been paying attention.”

“No, because you were prepared.”

Mara almost smiled.

Celeste noticed.

“You think this helps you?” she asked Mara.

“It helps me that he finally noticed.”

Celeste laid the folder on the table.

Inside was a printed bank statement.

A transfer of twenty-five thousand dollars had been made from Eleanor's household account to an account ending in 4419.

The recipient name was Mara Quinn.

Mara's mouth went dry.

“I have never seen that money.”

Celeste sat down opposite her.

“Of course not.”

Adrian scanned the page.

“When was this?”

“Four days ago.”

“I was at the neurologist with Eleanor four days ago.”

Celeste tapped the transaction line.

“The transfer was authorized online.”

Mara shook her head.

“I don't have access to her banking.”

“Someone used your employee email to request a password reset.”

Adrian looked at Mara.

Her anger turned to fear.

Her employee email was only accessible through the mansion's internal network.

Someone inside the house had used her identity.

Mara spoke slowly.

“Check the network logs.”

Celeste's confidence faltered for the first time.

Adrian caught it.

“Yes,” he said.

“We will.”

Celeste folded the bank statement.

“You are letting her manipulate you.”

“I am letting evidence speak.”

“She was holding a weapon when you came downstairs.”

“She was holding a cane.”

“She attacked me with it.”

Mara stood.

“That is a lie.”

Celeste stood too.

“You are a parasite who figured out that a lonely old woman was worth more to you confused than healthy.”

Mara moved before she thought.

Adrian stepped between them.

“Enough.”

The word filled the small room.

Celeste pointed at Mara over his shoulder.

“Get her out of this house.”

Adrian did not move.

Celeste's voice cracked.

“Adrian.”

He looked at Mara.

“You will leave tonight.”

Mara felt the decision strike harder than any slap.

“You said evidence would speak.”

“It will.”

“After I am gone?”

“Until I know what happened, you cannot be alone with my mother.”

Mara swallowed.

“And Celeste can?”

“No.”

Celeste's head snapped toward him.

Adrian continued.

“Mother will have a private nurse tonight.”

Celeste laughed bitterly.

“You are treating your wife like a suspect.”

“I am treating everyone like a suspect.”

Mara gathered her purse and coat under the eyes of two security guards.

As she crossed the foyer, she looked up at the chandelier again.

The crystals glittered in daylight fading through the tall windows.

Something dark sat behind the brass maintenance ring.

It was no larger than a coin.

Mara slowed.

A security guard touched her elbow.

“Keep moving.”

She did.

At the front door, Eleanor's new nurse wheeled the old woman past the corridor.

Their eyes met.

Eleanor's finger lifted once.

Then she tapped her own wrist.

Mara understood neither gesture.

Outside, the doors closed behind her.

Her phone buzzed before she reached the gate.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

May you like

It contained only four words.
