Chapter 13 - The Man With Two Funerals.

Charles Mercer was alive.

That fact shattered every theory again.

Police records showed that Mercer had supposedly died in a boating accident off the coast of Maine.

A body was never recovered.

His estate had been settled.

His accounts had been closed.

His widow had moved to Arizona.

Yet he walked into St. Matthew's chapel carrying a leather portfolio as calmly as a man arriving for a board meeting.

Ortiz ordered officers to hold position.

She wanted conversation before arrests.

Hidden microphones captured every word.

Richard spoke first.

“You told me you were never coming back.”

Mercer answered, “I told you I would not come back until Eleanor was out of the way.”

Mara felt Adrian stiffen beside her.

Celeste snapped, “She was supposed to be incompetent by now.”

Mercer looked at her.

“She would be if you could control your temper.”

Celeste's face twisted.

“I had it handled.”

“You struck at a servant in front of a camera.”

“I did not know the camera existed.”

“That is because you never ask the right questions.”

Richard stepped between them.

“Where is the relinquishment?”

Mercer smiled.

“You still think this is about your childhood.”

Richard's expression hardened.

“It is about what Henry stole from me.”

“No.”

Mercer opened the portfolio.

“It is about what Henry hid from everyone.”

He placed a document on the chapel pew.

The camera zoomed as far as it could.

Adrian could not read the text.

Richard could.

His face changed.

“What is this?”

“Your father's original company charter.”

Richard stared at him.

Mercer continued.

“Henry did not own Vale Industries when you were born.”

“Eleanor did.”

Adrian whispered, “What?”

Mara looked at him.

He genuinely did not know.

Mercer's voice carried through the tablet.

“Eleanor inherited the manufacturing company from her uncle.”

“Henry married into it.”

“He spent the next thirty years rewriting the public story until everyone believed he built it.”

Richard looked sick.

“Then why was I removed?”

Mercer sat on the edge of a pew.

“Because Henry discovered you were not his biological son.”

Silence filled the chapel.

Adrian stopped moving.

Richard's face emptied.

Celeste whispered, “You never told me that.”

Mercer ignored her.

“Henry had you removed while Eleanor was hospitalized after Adrian's birth.”

Richard's voice came out hoarse.

“Who was my father?”

Mercer looked at him.

“I was.”

Mara covered her mouth.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Richard staggered backward.

“No.”

Mercer remained seated.

“Eleanor and I had an affair during a separation Henry made sure no one knew about.”

“You were born the following year.”

“Henry believed you were his until you were seven.”

“He found letters.”

“He had a blood test performed.”

“Then he punished Eleanor through you.”

Richard's eyes filled with rage.

“You let him give me away.”

Mercer's confidence cracked.

“I tried to stop him.”

“You disappeared.”

“I had no legal standing.”

“You were my father.”

“And telling the world would have destroyed Eleanor.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“So everyone protected Eleanor.”

“No one protected me.”

Mara felt the weight of his sentence.

It did not excuse what he had done.

But it explained the wound he had fed for decades.

Celeste stepped toward Mercer.

“You promised us control.”

Mercer looked at her with contempt.

“I promised Richard evidence.”

“You promised me forty percent.”

“No.”

“Richard promised you forty percent.”

Celeste turned on Richard.

“You said he agreed.”

Richard did not look at her.

Mercer smiled faintly.

The alliance was cracking exactly where Eleanor wanted it to.

Then Mercer said something no one expected.

“I sent the messages from Henry's number.”

Ortiz looked sharply at Malcolm, who sat beside her.

Malcolm shook his head.

Mercer continued.

“Henry gave me that line years ago for private company matters.”

“When I learned it still existed, I used it.”

Mara whispered, “Then Eleanor was not the third contact.”

Adrian stared at the screen.

Mercer was the person who told Celeste and Richard not to stop.

He was the person who knew Adrian would ignore the warnings.

Ortiz gave a silent hand signal to officers.

But before they moved, Richard grabbed the portfolio.

He pulled out another document.

His eyes raced across it.

Then he looked at Mercer.

“You lied again.”

Mercer stood.

“Put that down.”

Richard held the page away.

“This says Eleanor amended the trust last year.”

Celeste turned.

“What?”

Richard read aloud.

“Richard Henry Mercer, formerly Richard Henry Vale, is restored as a recognized natural child of Eleanor Vale for purposes of inheritance.”

His voice broke.

“She put me back.”

Mercer lunged for the page.

Richard shoved him away.

“You told me she planned to erase me permanently.”

Mercer reached inside his coat.

Ortiz shouted into the radio.

“Move now.”

Officers burst through the chapel doors.

Celeste screamed and dropped to the floor.

Richard raised both hands.

Mercer pulled out not a gun but a small flash drive.

He crushed it beneath his heel.

An officer tackled him.

The drive shattered across the stone aisle.

Mara stared at the fragments on the live feed.

“What was on that?”

Malcolm's face had gone pale.

“The only copy of Henry Vale's private ledger.”

Adrian looked at him.

“What ledger?”

Malcolm swallowed.

“The one that proves why Charles Mercer was willing to fake his death.”

While officers waited outside the chapel, Richard demanded to know why Mercer had let him believe Eleanor hated him.

Mercer answered with brutal simplicity.

“Because anger made you useful.”

Richard stared at him.

“You needed access to the trust, and I needed someone with standing to challenge it.”

“You used me.”

“I gave you the truth.”

“You gave me the part of the truth that made me obedient.”

The sentence silenced even Celeste.

Mara watched Richard's face on the tablet and saw the first genuine break in his loyalty to the conspiracy.

People could endure being lied to by enemies.

Being curated by an ally was different.

Mercer had done to Richard what Henry had done to Eleanor decades earlier.

May you like

He had controlled another person's choices by controlling which facts that person was allowed to know.

For the first time, Richard seemed to understand that recovering power through deception had only recreated the abuse he claimed to be correcting.
