Chapter 4 - The Camera Nobody Remembered.

Sarah stared at the video attachment without opening it.
The unknown number sent another message.
"It's Ethan. New phone. I was recording Dad trying to carve the turkey because he nearly dropped it last year."
Ethan was Sarah's cousin, the kind of relative who was always filming ordinary family moments and forgetting to send them afterward.
Sarah had barely noticed him at dinner.
Now her pulse began to race.
James sat beside her on the edge of the nursery rug.
"You don't have to watch it tonight," he said.
Sarah tapped play.
The video began with laughter.
David stood near the turkey holding a carving knife while Ethan joked from behind the phone.
The frame shifted toward the far end of the table.
Sarah appeared in profile with Emma against her shoulder.
Lauren entered the frame smiling too widely.
There was no sound of an argument at first.
Lauren reached out.
Sarah's own voice could be heard clearly.
"She's tired, Lauren. Let me keep her for a minute."
Lauren laughed.
"You act like nobody else has ever held a baby."
Then she took Emma anyway.
The camera dipped toward the table, but the audio continued.
Emma fussed.
Lauren said, "See? You're fine."
There was a sharper cry.
The camera rose again.
Lauren's hand was around Emma's wrist as the baby tugged against her necklace.
Sarah moved immediately and took Emma back.
The entire exchange lasted only seconds.
Then came the line Sarah remembered most clearly.
"She is fine. Stop making everything dramatic."
The video did something Sarah had not expected.
It showed her mother.
She was standing directly behind Lauren.
She had seen the entire thing.
For half a second, their mother's face registered alarm.
Then she looked toward the dining room, noticed several relatives watching, and forced a smile.
"Let's all sit down," she said on the recording.
Sarah paused the video.
Her hand shook.
James did not speak.
"She saw," Sarah whispered.
"Yes."
"She saw everything."
"Yes."
Sarah pressed her knuckles against her mouth and stared at the frozen image of her mother's face.
The betrayal was not that her mother had failed to understand.
The video proved she had understood immediately.
She had simply chosen appearances over action.
Ethan texted again.
"I did not realize I had this until Lauren started telling people a different story."
Then another message appeared.
"I won't send it anywhere unless you want me to."
Sarah replied, "Thank you. Please don't post it."
She saved the file in two places.
James watched her carefully.
"What are you thinking?"
"I'm thinking my mother asked us to come back and finish Christmas after she watched that happen."
James looked toward Emma's crib.
"Then we know exactly what the real problem is."
Sarah's phone lit up again.
Her mother was calling.
Sarah nearly declined it.
Then she remembered the frozen expression from the video and answered.
"Hi, Mom."
Her mother's voice was soft and urgent.
"Sarah, your father told me what he sent you. Please don't involve the rest of the family."
Sarah looked at James.
"I haven't."
"Good. We need to keep this from becoming bigger than it is."
Sarah felt something inside her go perfectly still.
"Mom, did you see Lauren grab Emma?"
Silence.
"Mom?"
Another silence.
Then her mother whispered, "Yes."
Sarah closed her eyes.
"Thank you."
Her mother sounded confused.
"For what?"
"For finally telling the truth."
Sarah ended the call before her mother could say anything else.
Five seconds later, a text arrived.
"Please do not send that video to anyone."
Sarah stared at the message.

Her mother had not asked if Emma was okay.
She had asked Sarah to protect the family's image.
