The freezing winter air bit sharply at their exposed skin.
Snowflakes danced lightly under the warm glow of the amber streetlamps.
Daniel guided Clara and Lily carefully down the icy stone steps.
He kept his arm firmly wrapped around Clara's waist to steady her.
Every step they took away from the grand estate felt incredibly liberating.
They reached the family SUV parked at the edge of the circular driveway.
Daniel quickly opened the heavy back door for his young daughter.
He gently helped Lily climb into the safety of her car seat.
"You are safe now, my brave girl."
He whispered softly as he buckled her seatbelt securely across her chest.
Lily gave a small, exhausted nod and leaned her head against the window.
Daniel closed the door quietly and turned to face his wife.
Clara was standing by the passenger side, shivering slightly in the biting wind.
He reached out and gently cupped the uninjured side of her face.
His thumb stroked her cold cheekbone with immense, heartbreaking tenderness.
"I am so sorry, Clara."
His voice broke slightly under the crushing weight of his profound regret.
"I should have stood up to her years ago."
Clara placed her small, freezing hand over his warm one.
"You stood up for us tonight, Daniel."
"That is the only thing that matters to me right now."
He leaned in and pressed a long, apologetic kiss to her forehead.
They quickly climbed into the front seats of the dark, quiet vehicle.
Daniel started the engine, and warm air immediately began to blast through the vents.
The familiar hum of the car engine felt like a protective, private sanctuary.
He shifted the SUV into gear and slowly pressed the gas pedal.
The heavy winter tires crunched loudly against the fresh white snow.
As they drove down the long, winding driveway, Clara looked in the side mirror.
