Chapter 2: The Morning Performance

By 7:12 a.m., the entire facility was crawling with activity.
Police.
Paramedics.
Employees whispering in tight clusters.
I stood just beyond the loading dock, wrapped in a long coat, watching everything unfold like a carefully staged play.
Nathan arrived at 7:18.
Right on schedule.
His car door slammed harder than usual. He rushed toward the building, face pale, movements frantic—almost convincing.
Almost.
“What happened?” he demanded.
A supervisor stepped forward nervously. “Sir… Unit 7—there’s been an incident—”
Nathan didn’t wait.
He ran.
Pushed through the doors.
Burst into the freezer corridor.
And then—
He stopped.
Because the door to Unit 7 was already open.
Empty.
No body.
No frost-covered corpse.
Just silence.
Confusion flickered across his face.
Then something worse.
Fear.
“Where is she?” he whispered.
“Looking for me?”
My voice cut cleanly through the corridor.
Nathan turned slowly.
His eyes locked onto mine.
For a moment, his expression broke completely—shock, disbelief, terror—all at once.
“Evelyn…?” he breathed.
I stepped forward, calm and composed.
Behind me, Donovan entered with two officers.
And a tablet.
“Mr. Whitmore,” one officer said, “we’re going to need you to come with us.”
Nathan shook his head, backing away. “No—this—this is insane—”
Donovan tapped the screen.
Nathan’s own voice filled the hallway.
Clear.
Cold.
Unmistakable.
“By morning, it’s a tragedy.”
Miriam’s voice followed.
“You inherit everything.”
Nathan’s knees nearly gave out.
“It’s not what it sounds like—” he stammered.
“It sounds exactly like what it is,” I replied.

For the first time in ten years…
Nathan had nothing left to say.
