Chapter 2: The Truth Between Them

The city lights flickered beyond the glass walls, but inside, everything felt still.
“Go to your room, Leo,” Ethan said, his tone softer now—but still controlled.
Leo hesitated, looking up at the woman.
She nodded reassuringly. “I’ll come check on you.”
He let go slowly, walking away with heavy steps.
The moment his bedroom door closed, Ethan exhaled sharply.
“You’re overstepping,” he said.
“Am I?” she replied.
His eyes hardened. “You’re his nanny.”
Her lips pressed together—but there was no anger in her eyes. Only something deeper.
“Is that really what you think I am?” she asked.
Ethan didn’t answer.
Instead, he turned toward the window, staring out at the skyline.
“She left,” he said finally. “She chose to leave. Don’t rewrite that.”
The woman took a slow breath.
“I didn’t leave him,” she said.
That made him turn.
“You left us,” Ethan snapped.
Her voice trembled—but she didn’t break.
“You pushed me out, Ethan. Every time I tried to reach you… you shut me down. You buried yourself in work, in control… in perfection.”
His silence said more than any argument.
“I stayed away because I thought it was better for Leo,” she continued. “But look at him… he’s breaking.”
Ethan looked toward Leo’s closed door.
For the first time, something in his expression cracked.
“I don’t know how to fix this,” he admitted quietly.

She stepped closer.
“You don’t fix it,” she said. “You feel it. With him.”
