Chapter 3: The Shared Loaf

Days turned into weeks.
Lily stayed.
At first, it was “temporary.”
Then it became something else.
She began to smile more. Her hands stopped shaking. Her eyes slowly regained a light no one thought could return.
Emily never left her side.
They ate together.
Played together.
Laughed together.
And every morning, without fail, they shared a piece of bread.
Always split in half.
Just like that first day.
One evening, as snow fell softly outside, Daniel stood watching the two girls from the doorway.
Lily was teaching Emily how to fold paper into small birds.
Emily was failing badly.
Both of them were laughing.
“You’re doing it wrong,” Lily giggled.
“I’m not!” Emily protested. “This is just a… creative version.”
Daniel found himself smiling.
A rare, quiet smile.
He stepped forward.
“Dinner’s ready,” he said.
Both girls looked up.
“Can we all eat together?” Emily asked.
Daniel paused.
Then nodded.
At the table, Lily hesitated before sitting down.
“Is this… really okay?” she asked softly.
Daniel looked at her.
“Yes,” he said.
“You’re part of this home now.”
Lily’s eyes filled with tears again—but this time, they weren’t from hunger.
They were from something she had never truly known before.
Belonging.
Emily reached over and broke her piece of bread in half, handing it to Lily out of habit.
Lily laughed through her tears.
“You don’t have to do that anymore,” she said.
Emily shook her head.
“I know,” she smiled. “I just want to.”
Daniel watched them quietly.
That simple act—
A shared loaf of bread—
Had changed all of their lives.
And outside, the cold winter continued.
But inside that house—
May you like
Warmth had finally found a place to stay.
The End.
