Chapter 2: The Shift

Patricia recovered first.
She always did.
âThat recording is meaningless,â she snapped, her voice sharp now, stripped of its sweetness. âIt proves nothing.â
But her hands were shaking.
Grant stepped forward. âDelete it.â
I laughedâa soft, broken sound that surprised even me.
âNo.â
Cole finally spoke. âYou donât understand what youâre doing.â
I turned my head slowly toward him. âNo, Cole. I understand perfectly.â
I picked up my phone and held it up.
âItâs already backed up. Multiple places.â
That was a lie.
But they didnât know that.
Patriciaâs composure cracked completely. âYou ungrateful littleâafter everything this family has done for youââ
âYour family,â I cut in, âtried to silence me.â
A nurseâs voice echoed faintly down the hallway.
Grant glanced toward the door.
For the first time, I saw it.
Fear.
Real, unmistakable fear.
âYou donât want this going public,â he said quietly. âNeither do we. We can still settle this.â
âSettle?â I repeated. âYou mean pay me to disappear?â
Cole stepped closer to the bed. âJust sign the papers. Take the money. Weâll⊠weâll increase it.â
I studied his face.
The man I married.
The man who chose silence over truth.
âHow long?â I asked.
He blinked. âWhat?â
âHow long were you planning this?â
His silence was answer enough.
Something inside meâsomething that had been holding onâfinally let go.
âGet out,â I said.
Patricia scoffed. âYou donât get toââ
âGET OUT.â
My voice echoed through the room.
A nurse appeared in the doorway, startled. âIs everything okay here?â
I didnât look away from them.
âNo,â I said. âItâs not. And Iâd like these people to leave.â
Grant exhaled slowly, then nodded. âCome on.â
Patricia resisted for half a secondâthen turned sharply, her heels clicking faster this time.
Cole lingered.
âPlease,â he said softly.
I didnât respond.
He left.
The door closed.
And just like thatâ
The power shifted.
May you like
I wasnât the woman on the floor anymore.
I was the one holding the truth.
