CHAPTER 2: LEARNING HOW TO LIVE

Weeks later, Ethan’s reflection looked like a stranger.
Gone were the tailored suits and polished image. In their place—rolled-up sleeves, tired eyes, and hands learning what work truly felt like.
He had sold his watch. His car. Everything that tied him to the life he walked away from.
And yet… he had never felt more awake.
Lily sat by the small apartment window, sunlight brushing against her healing face. The bruises had faded, but something deeper still lingered in her eyes—fear, carefully hidden.
“You don’t have to stay,” she said quietly one afternoon. “You already gave up everything.”
Ethan shook his head, stepping closer.
“I didn’t give up everything,” he said softly. “I finally chose something.”
Silence filled the room—but this time, it wasn’t cold.
It was safe.
He began rebuilding—not wealth, but purpose. A modest job. Honest work. Long nights. And every evening, he came home… to her.
Slowly, Lily began to smile again.
