Chapter 2: The Truth Beneath the Surface

By morning, the mansion was silent.

Too silent.

Eliza woke in a hospital bed, the steady beep of machines grounding her in reality. Her body ached, but the first thing she did was reach for her stomach.

A shaky breath escaped her lips when she felt it—still there.

Still alive.

Tears of relief streamed down her face.

“You’re stronger than they think,” she whispered.

But strength alone wouldn’t protect her.

Not anymore.

Later that afternoon, a familiar face appeared at the door.

Not Daniel.

Not his mother.

But someone she hadn’t expected.

Marcus Hale.

Daniel’s older brother—and the one man who had always watched everything… quietly.

“I saw the footage,” Marcus said without preamble.

Eliza’s heart skipped.

“What… footage?”

“The security cameras,” he replied, stepping inside. “They don’t lie.”

Her breath caught.

Marcus pulled out a tablet and pressed play.

There it was.

The staircase.

Eliza… walking carefully.

Vanessa… approaching from behind.

A pause.

A glance.

And then—

A deliberate shove.

Eliza flinched as the video replayed her fall.

But this time… she didn’t look away.

“Daniel hasn’t seen this yet,” Marcus added.

“Why?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Marcus’s gaze hardened.

“Because he wouldn’t believe it. Not from me. Not yet.”

Silence stretched between them.

Then Eliza spoke, her voice no longer fragile.

“Then we make him believe it.”

For the first time since the fall… her eyes burned with something fierce.

Not pain.

Not sorrow.

Justice.

“They tried to erase me,” she said. “They almost took my child.”

She looked up at Marcus.

“They don’t get to walk away from that.”

Marcus gave a slow nod.

“Good,” he said. “Because I’ve been waiting a long time for someone to finally bring her down.”

Eliza clenched her fists.

This time… she wasn’t the victim.

She was the reckoning.
