Chapter 1: The First Night of Warmth

The moment their glasses touched, something invisible shifted in the room.
Isabelle’s hands trembled—not from cold this time, but from disbelief. The golden light of the chandelier reflected in her teary eyes as she looked around, still unsure if this was real.
“Eat,” the man said gently, placing a warm plate in front of her.
Not ordering. Not expecting.
Inviting.
She hesitated.
For years, every meal had come with conditions—clean this, finish that, don’t complain. But here, there was only kindness.
Her daughter, Lily, didn’t hesitate at all.
“Mommy, look!” the little girl whispered, her eyes sparkling as she pointed at the roasted turkey. “It’s so big!”
The man chuckled softly and began cutting a piece—carefully, respectfully—and placed it on Isabelle’s plate first.
Not the child.
Not himself.
Her.
That was the moment Isabelle broke.
A quiet sob escaped her lips as she covered her mouth, overwhelmed. No one had treated her like this… not in years.
“You’re safe here,” he said simply.
