CHAPTER 2: Picking Up the Pieces

The front door closed behind them with a quiet click.

And just like that...

The house felt different.

Quieter.

Safer.

Emily hadn’t let go of me.

Not even once.

“Hey,” I whispered gently, brushing her tangled hair back from her face. “I’ve got you. I’m here now.”

She nodded, but her eyes were glassy—like she was still trying to come back to herself.

“Let’s fix this,” I said softly.

Not the house.

Not the mess.

Her.

Our son.

Our life.

I carried Leo upstairs and checked his temperature—103. My chest tightened.

“I’m calling the doctor,” I said.

Emily tried to protest. “I was going to—”

“I know,” I said gently. “But you don’t have to do everything anymore.”

That broke her again.

Not loudly this time.

Just quiet tears.

While I handled the call, ran a bath to cool Leo down, and set up medicine, Emily sat on the edge of the bed like she didn’t quite know what to do with her hands.

Like she’d forgotten what it felt like not to be overwhelmed.

That realization hit me harder than anything else.

How long had she been like this?

How long had I been too busy… too absent… to see it?

That night, after we got Leo’s fever under control and he finally fell asleep between us, Emily spoke.

“I didn’t want to complain,” she whispered into the dark.

I turned to her.

“They said I should be grateful,” she continued. “That I ‘had it easy.’ That I just needed to manage better.”

My jaw clenched.

“You don’t ever have to earn your place in this family,” I said firmly. “You are this family.”

She looked at me like she wasn’t sure she believed it yet.

So I showed her.

Not with words.

But by staying.

May you like

By helping.

By being there the way I should’ve been all along.
