Chapter 1: The Man Everyone Misjudged

The silence didn’t just linger.
It pressed.
Heavy. Suffocating. Absolute.
Giulia couldn’t breathe.
Her pulse thundered in her ears as she stared at Marco’s hand still clasped with Chairman Vance’s. That one simple gesture had rewritten the entire room.
No—
It had rewritten her entire reality.
“We… we’ve been expecting you,” Chairman Vance repeated, his tone respectful—deferential, even.
Deferential.
To him.
Giulia’s fingers trembled at her sides.
That wasn’t possible.
Marco… was nobody.
He had been nobody.
Hadn’t he?
Marco released the chairman’s hand with an easy, unhurried motion. The kind of calm that didn’t come from confidence—but from certainty.
“I apologize for being late,” he said quietly.
Even his voice had changed.
Or maybe… she had just never really listened before.
Chairman Vance shook his head immediately. “Your time is your own, sir.”
The crowd shifted uneasily.
Those same people who had mocked him minutes ago now avoided eye contact entirely, as if looking at Marco directly might expose them.
Giulia took a shaky step forward.
“Marco… what is this?” she demanded, though her voice lacked its earlier sharpness.
For the first time—
He looked at her.
Really looked at her.
Not with anger.
Not with pain.
But with something far colder.
Distance.
“You wanted security to escort me out,” he said calmly.
Each word landed with surgical precision.
“Now you’re asking me to stay?”
Her lips parted.
No sound came out.
Marco’s gaze flicked briefly to the shattered wine glass at her feet—then back to her face.
“Interesting.”
A faint murmur rippled through the crowd.
Giulia felt it—felt the shift of power slipping violently out of her hands.
“No, wait—” she started, stepping closer, her voice suddenly softer. “There’s clearly been a misunderstanding—”
“There wasn’t,” Marco interrupted gently.
That was what broke her.
Not anger.
Not accusation.
Just certainty.
“There wasn’t any misunderstanding at all.”
Chairman Vance stepped slightly to the side, gesturing toward the open doors.
“The board is waiting, sir.”
Marco nodded once.
Then he turned.
Just like that.
No hesitation.
No second glance.
And began walking toward the exit.
Giulia reached out instinctively.
“Marco—!”
He didn’t stop.
Didn’t slow.
Didn’t even acknowledge her voice.
He walked away—
Leaving her standing in the center of the ballroom, surrounded by people who no longer saw her the same way.
Not as powerful.
May you like
Not as untouchable.
But as someone who had just made the worst mistake of her life.
