CHAPTER 2 — A Promise Remembered
Lena didn’t expect to see them again.
Not people like that.
People who arrived in black SUVs and disappeared just as quickly.
By the next morning, the cash was gone—taken by her furious boss, who didn’t ask questions and didn’t say thank you. Just like always.
Life went on.
Cold mornings. Long shifts. Counting coins.
Until three weeks later.
A black car pulled up again.
This time, it wasn’t chaos.
It was quiet.
The same man stepped out—but today, he wasn’t rushed. He wasn’t angry.
And Emily was with him.
Clean.
Warm.
Smiling.
Lena almost didn’t recognize her.
“Hi,” Emily said softly, stepping forward.
Lena’s chest tightened. “Hey, sweetheart.”
The little girl held something in her hands.
A small envelope.
“I told you I’d pay you back,” she said.
Lena shook her head gently. “You don’t have to do that.”
“Yes, I do,” Emily insisted.
She held the envelope out with both hands.
Inside was a single dollar bill… and a crumpled drawing.
It showed a stick-figure girl and a woman standing beside a hotdog cart, both smiling under a bright yellow sun.
Lena felt her throat close.
“It’s everything I have,” Emily added. “But I’ll give you more when I’m big.”
Lena knelt down, just like before.
“This is more than enough,” she whispered.
Behind her, the man watched silently.
Then he stepped forward.
“My name is Daniel Carter,” he said. “And I owe you more than money.”
Lena stood slowly. “You don’t owe me anything.”
He gave a small, almost sad smile.
“You reminded her what kindness looks like,” he said. “In a world that hasn’t been very kind to her.”
He paused.
“Or to you, I’m guessing.”
Lena didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Daniel nodded slightly, like he understood anyway.
“I run a company,” he continued. “Several, actually. And I’ve been looking for someone… honest.”
Lena blinked. “I sell hotdogs.”
“No,” he said gently. “You see people.”
