Chapter 3: The Truth They Buried

The house emptied quickly after that.
Not dramatically. Quietly.
The kind of quiet exit wealthy people specialized in—no questions asked, no scenes made, just careful distance from something inconvenient.
By midnight, Mercer House was almost silent.
Logan sat in his office, the nursery footage playing on a loop in front of him.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Marina lifting Noah without hesitation.
Noah reaching for her before she even spoke.
That word—
“Mama’s here.”
Not once.
Not by accident.
A pattern.
A bond.
A truth.
Behind him, the door opened.
Vanessa didn’t knock.
“You’re making a mistake,” she said.
Logan didn’t turn around. “Am I?”
“Yes.” She crossed her arms. “You’re letting a housekeeper manipulate you with some emotional stunt.”
He paused the footage.
Turned.
“Then explain this.”
Vanessa’s eyes flicked to the screen—and for just a second, something slipped.
That was all Logan needed.
“She’s lying,” Vanessa said quickly. “Obviously. People like her—”
“People like her what?”
Vanessa hesitated.
Logan stood slowly.
“You said he needed structure,” he continued. “You said people were ‘babying him.’”
His voice didn’t rise.
That made it worse.
“But the only time he isn’t afraid,” Logan said, “is when he’s with her.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened. “He’s a child. He doesn’t know anything.”
Logan stepped closer.
“No,” he said quietly. “Children know exactly who is safe.”
Silence stretched between them.
Then—
“You gave him something.”
It wasn’t a question.
Vanessa smiled faintly. “Just herbal drops. To calm him.”
Logan held her gaze.
“You drugged him.”
Her smile didn’t reach her eyes.
“He was difficult.”
That was it.
That was the moment something inside Logan finally, completely broke.
Not loudly.
Not violently.
Just… cleanly.
Like a line being cut.
He stepped past her.
Picked up his phone.
And dialed.
Vanessa didn’t move at first.
Then—
“Logan,” she said, sharper now.
May you like
He didn’t stop.
By the time she understood, it was already too late.
