CHAPTER 1: THE MOMENT SHE RECOGNIZED HIM

The woman’s hands began to shake.
“No…” she whispered, stepping closer.
Her eyes locked onto the photograph in Noah’s hands.
The same photograph.
The same one she had kept in her wallet for years—until the day everything fell apart.
“Noah…?” her voice broke.
The boy froze.
No one had said his name like that in a long time.
Not with warmth.
Not with recognition.
He looked up slowly, confused.
The woman dropped to her knees in front of him, tears already streaming down her face.
“It’s me… it’s Mom,” she said, her voice trembling uncontrollably.
The world seemed to stop.
The little girl in the yellow coat stepped back, watching quietly.
Noah blinked.
Once.
Twice.
As if trying to wake up from a dream.
“My… mom?” he whispered.
She nodded, covering her mouth as sobs escaped.
“I’ve been looking for you… for years. I never stopped.”
Noah’s grip tightened on the photograph.
The same woman.
But cleaner.
Smiling.
Alive in a way he couldn’t recognize anymore.
“You… left,” he said softly.
The words weren’t angry.
Just… empty.
And somehow that hurt more.
Her face crumpled.
“I didn’t leave you,” she said quickly. “You were taken. There was an accident… I lost everything. I searched every shelter, every street—I never gave up on you.”
Noah stared at her.
The noise of the street faded into nothing.
May you like
Just the two of them.
And eight years of silence between them.
