CHAPTER 2: THE COST OF EVERYTHING

By morning, the story hadn’t broken publicly.

But inside the right circles, it was already moving.

Fast.

Richard stormed into Marianne Holt’s office just before noon, fury barely contained.

“This is harassment,” he snapped, tossing the documents onto her desk. “She’s emotional. Pregnant. You’re taking advantage of that.”

Marianne didn’t flinch.

“Mr. Donovan,” she said evenly, “everything in those filings is supported by financial records.”

“You don’t have proof of anything illegal.”

Marianne opened a folder and slid it toward him.

“Then you won’t mind explaining these.”

Wire transfers.

Account links.

Property titles.

Sabrina Cole’s name appearing again and again like a stain that wouldn’t wash out.

Richard didn’t sit.

Didn’t touch the folder.

But his anger shifted.

Less explosive.

More calculated.

“You’re making a mistake,” he said quietly. “This hurts her more than it hurts me.”

“No,” Marianne replied. “It stops hurting her.”

Across town, Clara sat in the nursery, sunlight spilling across unfinished wood and unopened boxes. She held a tiny sock in her hand, turning it slowly between her fingers.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Richard.

We can fix this. Don’t do anything stupid.

She stared at it for a long moment.

Then set the phone down without replying.

Because for the first time—

She understood something clearly.

Love had kept her quiet.

But motherhood made her brave.
