CHAPTER 1: THE PROMISE SHE FORGOT

The marble floor felt colder than ever as silence swallowed the entire lobby.

Victoria Hale didn’t move.

Her breath came in short, uneven bursts as her eyes stayed locked on the little girl—on the photograph—on the past she had buried so deeply she convinced herself it never existed.

“I… I thought you were gone…” Victoria whispered, her voice cracking in a way no one had ever heard before.

The little girl shook her head slowly. “Mommy waited for you.”

Each word landed like a blade.

Guests who had been recording moments ago slowly lowered their phones. The tension in the air shifted—no longer curiosity, but something heavier. Shame. Regret. Truth.

Victoria dropped to her knees.

Right there on the polished marble floor.

Her diamonds, her status, her power—none of it mattered anymore.

“What’s your name?” she asked, almost afraid of the answer.

“…Lily.”

Victoria’s lips trembled. That was the name her sister had once told her. The name she had promised to remember.

“I didn’t know…” Victoria said, tears finally spilling. “I swear to you, I didn’t know she—”

“She got sick,” Lily interrupted softly. “She said you would come.”

Victoria’s heart shattered.

But she hadn’t come.

Not when her sister needed her most.

Not when Lily needed her at all.

The security guard quietly stepped back. The pianist didn’t dare touch the keys again. Even the rain seemed to soften against the windows.

Victoria reached out slowly, hesitantly—like Lily might disappear.

“I’m so sorry…” she whispered.

May you like

Lily looked at her for a long moment.

Then, very gently, she placed her small hand in Victoria’s.
