CHAPTER 1: THE SILENCE AFTER THE STORM

The entire arena held its breath.

No one moved.

No one even dared to speak.

The massive black bull—Ranger—stood still, his head pressed gently against the boy’s chest. His powerful body, moments ago filled with rage, now seemed… calm.

Almost protective.

The boy wrapped his small arms around Ranger’s neck, clutching the red bandana.

“I knew you’d remember,” he whispered through tears.

From the stands, a man shouted, “Get that kid out of there!”

But no one stepped forward.

Because something sacred was happening.

The rodeo announcer lowered his microphone, voice trembling.

“Folks… I’ve never seen anything like this.”

A handler slowly approached the edge of the arena, cautious.

“Kid… step away from him,” he said carefully.

The boy shook his head.

“He won’t hurt me,” he replied. “He’s just… lonely.”

That word hit harder than anything.

Lonely.

Just like the boy.

Ranger let out a deep breath, his massive chest rising and falling. Then, slowly, he nudged the boy—gently, like a warning.

The boy looked up.

“I know,” he said softly. “You miss him too.”

And in that moment—

Everyone understood.

This wasn’t about control.

This was about loss.
