Chapter 2: Pieces of the Truth

The mansion felt different the next morning.
Quieter. Lighter.
But not untouched.
Lily sat at the kitchen island, drawing with her crayons while sunlight poured through the tall windows. Ethan watched her from across the room, coffee untouched in his hands.
He couldn’t stop replaying the night.
Not just what Lily said—but the maid’s reaction.
That look.
Fear.
“Sir?”
Ethan turned. It was Maria—the housemaid from the party. She stood hesitantly at the doorway, her hands clasped tightly together.
“Do you have a moment?” she asked.
Ethan nodded. “Of course.”
She stepped in slowly, glancing once at Lily before lowering her voice. “I didn’t know if I should say anything… but after last night…”
“You should,” Ethan said gently.
Maria swallowed. “Miss Vanessa… she’s been like that for a while. Not just with Lily.”
Ethan felt his chest tighten.
“She would criticize everything. Yell over small mistakes. Sometimes…” Maria hesitated, “sometimes worse.”
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
Maria gave a sad smile. “Because you looked happy, sir. And because people like her… they’re different when you’re watching.”
That truth landed heavy.
Ethan ran a hand through his hair, exhaling slowly. “Thank you for telling me.”
Maria nodded, relief flickering in her eyes.
As she turned to leave, Lily suddenly spoke.
“Maria?”
She looked back.
“Do you want to see my drawing?”
Maria smiled warmly. “I’d love to.”
Ethan watched as the two of them leaned over the paper together—Lily explaining every color, every shape, as if nothing bad had ever happened.
And maybe… that was the point.
Children didn’t carry darkness the way adults did.
They healed forward.
Ethan realized something then.
Last night wasn’t just an ending.
It was a rescue.
May you like
Not just for Lily.
But for all of them.
