CHAPTER 2: What They Became

The street fell silent as the man continued.
“We didn’t just get your locket back,” he said. “We got caught.”
Her breath hitched.
“The man we chased… he wasn’t just a thief. He worked for people far more dangerous.”
The second man stepped in. “They took us. Forced us into things children should never see.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“For years,” the third added, “we survived the only way we could.”
The first man looked directly at her. “We built power. Money. Influence. Not because we wanted it… but because we needed it to get out.”
“And the locket?” she asked softly.
“I kept it,” he said. “It reminded me that once… someone showed us kindness without expecting anything back.”
Silence stretched between them.
“Everything we became…” he continued, “started with you.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“I didn’t do anything special,” she said.
“You saved us,” he replied firmly.
The second man glanced around at the children sitting nearby. “And you’re still doing it.”
The woman looked down at her worn hands.
“I just didn’t want anyone to feel the way you did that day.”
May you like
The first man smiled faintly.
“That’s exactly why we came back.”
