Chapter 2: Shadows of the Past

Nora didn’t sleep that night.

The guest room she had been given was larger than any place she had ever lived in. Soft sheets, warm lights, silence that felt too heavy to trust.

Family.

The word didn’t feel real.

The next morning, everything changed.

At breakfast, she met them.

Mr. Whitmore’s younger brother, Richard.

And his daughter, Vanessa.

Vanessa’s smile was polite—but her eyes were not.

“So this is her?” Vanessa said, stirring her coffee slowly. “The long-lost miracle.”

Nora lowered her gaze, uncomfortable.

Mr. Whitmore’s tone sharpened. “Watch your words.”

Vanessa shrugged lightly. “I’m just surprised. After eighteen years, suddenly a maid shows up wearing Elena’s locket? It’s… convenient.”

The accusation hung in the air.

Nora’s chest tightened.

“I’m not lying,” she said softly.

Vanessa leaned forward slightly. “Prove it.”

Before Nora could respond, Mr. Whitmore spoke.

“She doesn’t need to prove anything. I already know.”

But Richard, who had remained silent until now, finally spoke in a calm, measured voice.

“Brother… you believe you know. That’s different.”

The tension in the room shifted instantly.

“There are legal matters to consider,” Richard continued. “Inheritance. Reputation. If this claim becomes public without verification—”

“It will be verified,” Mr. Whitmore cut in.

And so, by afternoon, arrangements were made.

A DNA test.

Simple. Scientific. Final.

But as Nora sat in the sterile clinic room, watching the nurse prepare the sample, her hands trembled.

Because for the first time in her life… she wasn’t afraid of being nobody.

She was afraid of being someone.

That night, Vanessa made a phone call.

“They’re testing her,” she said coldly. “We need to move faster.”

A pause.

Then a quiet voice replied from the other end:

“Then make sure the truth never reaches them.”
