CHAPTER 3: A Second Chance at Forever

Two weeks later, sunlight poured gently through the hospital window.
Lena stirred.
Her eyes fluttered open slowly, adjusting to the light—and then she saw him.
Daniel.
For a moment, she thought she was dreaming.
“…Daniel?”
He smiled, tears already forming in his eyes. “Hey.”
She tried to sit up, but he gently stopped her. “Easy. You’re safe now.”
Her gaze shifted—and then she saw Emma asleep in the chair beside the bed, her tiny hand still holding onto Daniel’s coat sleeve.
Confusion turned into realization.
“You found him…” Lena whispered.
Emma stirred slightly, waking up. When she saw her mother awake, her face lit up instantly.
“Mommy!”
Lena pulled her into a tight embrace, tears streaming down her face.
Daniel watched them, his heart fuller than it had ever been.
“I’m not going anywhere,” he said quietly.
Lena looked up at him, searching his face.
“You left once,” she said.
“I know,” he admitted. “And I’ll regret that for the rest of my life. But if you give me one chance… I’ll spend every day making it right. For both of you.”
Silence filled the room—but this time, it was warm.
Hopeful.
Emma looked between them and smiled.
“Does that mean… we can be a family now?”
Daniel knelt beside her, brushing a strand of hair from her face.
“That’s exactly what it means.”
Lena hesitated for only a moment—then nodded.
And just like that, the past no longer defined them.
