CHAPTER 2: What You Didn’t See

Victoria recovered the only way she knew how—by forcing a laugh.
“Oh, come on,” she said, waving her hand as if brushing away discomfort. “So you got lucky. Maybe married rich? Good for you.”
Her husband glanced at her, uneasy now.
Chloe closed the jewelry case gently.
“No,” she said. “I didn’t get lucky.”
She stepped closer—not aggressively, but with quiet certainty.
“I got left behind.”
Victoria frowned. “What is that supposed to mean?”
“It means,” Chloe continued, “when things got hard, when my family lost everything… you disappeared. You didn’t answer my calls. You told people I was ‘dragging you down.’”
The air shifted.
“I had nothing,” Chloe said. “No money. No connections. Just time… and a decision.”
She paused.
“I decided I wasn’t going to stay where you left me.”
Victoria’s husband looked at Chloe now with something new—respect.
“I started small,” Chloe went on. “Internships. Night classes. Building things from scratch. While you were busy maintaining appearances…”
Her gaze softened, almost sadly.
“I was building a life.”
Victoria shook her head, but there was no confidence left in it. “That doesn’t explain this.”
Chloe smiled faintly.
“It doesn’t have to.”
The Store Manager stepped in, as if sensing the close of something bigger than a sale.
“Miss Chloe is also the majority stakeholder in our new private investment group,” he added calmly.
Victoria blinked.
Her husband’s eyes widened.
“Investment group?” he repeated.
“Yes,” the manager said. “The same one your company recently applied to partner with.”
Silence.
Then realization.
Victoria turned to her husband slowly.
He looked back at her—no longer confused.

Now he understood exactly who Chloe was.
And exactly what Victoria had lost.
