CHAPTER 2: THE TRUTH HE RAN FROM

Five years earlier.

A small town.

A summer he never talked about.

Her name was Sarah.

She worked at a roadside diner just outside the city, saving money, laughing easily, believing in things Ethan had already learned to distrust.

He had been different then.

Less polished.

Less careful.

He stayed longer than he meant to.

Fell harder than he planned to.

And when she told him she was pregnant—

He panicked.

“I can’t do this,” he had said, pacing the tiny apartment. “My family—my career—this isn’t… this isn’t the life I’m building.”

Sarah had looked at him quietly.

“You mean we’re not.”

He left the next morning.

Sent money once.

Then disappeared into the life waiting for him—investments, galas, engagements to women like the one standing beside him now.

Perfect.

Predictable.

Safe.

Until this moment.

Back in the present, Ethan dropped to his knees in front of the little girl.

“Where is your mother?” he asked, his voice barely steady.

Lily hesitated.

Then whispered, “She’s sick.”

Silence crushed the room.

The bride stepped back slowly, her expression shifting—not just anger now, but realization.

“This is real…” she said.

Ethan stood, turning to her.

“I didn’t know,” he said. “I swear—I didn’t know.”

She let out a hollow laugh. “You didn’t know? Or you didn’t want to?”

May you like

He had no answer.

Because both were true.
