Chapter 3: What Was Meant to Be

The next few days passed in a blur of tests, questions, and sleepless nights.

Dr. Mercer didn’t push. He didn’t accuse.

But he stayed.

Checked on my son more than necessary. Held him once, carefully, like he was holding something sacred.

Finally, the results came in.

DNA tests.

Not what I expected.

Not what anyone expected.

Dr. Mercer sat beside my hospital bed, the envelope in his hands.

“I owe you the truth,” he said.

My heart pounded.

“Just tell me.”

He nodded.

“I’m not your child’s father.”

Relief rushed through me—quick, sharp.

But it didn’t last.

“However…” he continued, “there is something else.”

I braced myself.

“The genetic markers…” he said slowly, “they show a rare hereditary trait. One that existed in my family line… but shouldn’t appear anymore.”

I frowned. “What does that mean?”

He smiled faintly, eyes distant.

“It means science doesn’t have all the answers.”

I looked down at my son.

His tiny fingers curled around mine.

Warm. Real. Mine.

“What are you saying?” I asked softly.

Dr. Mercer stood, exhaling slowly.

“I’m saying,” he replied, “that whatever brought him here… chose you.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“Why me?”

He smiled—gentle this time.

“Because you didn’t give up.”

Weeks later, I brought my son home.

Not to the life I had lost.

But to something new.

Dr. Mercer stayed in our lives—not as a mystery, not as a ghost from the past…

…but as family.

And Adrian?

He called.

Of course he did.

When he heard the rumors. When he realized what he had walked away from.

I listened.

Then I hung up.

Because I wasn’t alone anymore.

I had my son.

And somehow…

May you like

That was exactly where I was meant to be.

The end.
