CHAPTER 3 — THE MAN WHO PLANNED BEYOND DEATH

Two days later, I sat in a secure recovery suite on the top floor of a private hospital wing I didn’t even know existed.

My daughter Grace slept beside me in a reinforced bassinet.

Noah was in the next room under medical watch.

Safe.

Mine.

My father had been removed by court order within hours. Brent was under investigation for attempted custodial interference. My mother had disappeared into silence, unable to defend what she had allowed.

And Caleb…

Caleb was everywhere and nowhere.

The officer returned one final time.

“There’s one more directive,” he said.

He handed me a sealed envelope labeled:

ONLY OPEN WHEN BOTH CHILDREN ARE SAFE.

My breath caught.

Inside was a second letter.

Short.

Final.

If you’re reading this, then I didn’t just protect you in life. I finished protecting you in death. Don’t waste time on revenge. They’ve already lost everything that mattered. Build the life I didn’t get to stay for. —Caleb

I pressed the letter to my chest.

May you like

For the first time in days, I didn’t cry from pain.

I cried from safety.
