Chapter 1: The Truth Inside Silence

The ballroom remained suspended in a fragile stillness, as if even the air feared moving too quickly.
Damianâs gaze didnât leave Elena. He wasnât looking at the flash drive. He was watching herâevery micro-expression, every flicker of guilt she tried to suppress.
âElena,â he said quietly, almost gently. âWhat is she talking about?â
Elena shook her head, but the motion came too late, too rehearsed. âItâs nothing. Sheâs confused.â
Mary let out a soft breath, almost amused. âSix years ago,â she said, âyou destroyed a womanâs life to protect your own.â
A ripple of unease moved through the crowd.
Mary stepped closer, her voice still calm, but now edged with something deeperâsomething earned.
âYou took credit for research that wasnât yours. You buried the evidence. And when I tried to expose youâŠâ She paused, her eyes locking onto Elenaâs. âYou made sure no one believed me.â
Elenaâs hand tightened around the edge of the table.
Damianâs voice hardened. âIs that true?â
âNo,â Elena said quicklyâbut her voice cracked.
Mary slid the flash drive slightly forward. âEverything is on there. Emails. Financial transfers. The original files.â

Silence.
Then Damian reached outâand picked it up.
