Chapter 2: Pieces of the Truth

The courtroom reconvened the next morning under a different kind of tensionâquieter, sharper, like a storm that had already decided to hit.
The pink toy phone now sat inside an evidence bag on the clerkâs desk.
No one laughed at it anymore.
A forensic audio expert took the stand, adjusting his glasses as he reviewed the playback equipment. The courtroom leaned in collectively as the recording played againâcleaner this time, amplified.
âAfter tonight, the company is ours.â
No distortion. No doubt.
âIs the voice authentic?â Mrs. Gableâs attorney asked.
The expert nodded.
âIt matches Ms. Clara Vossâs voiceprint with a 99.8% probability.â
A ripple spread through the room.
Clara didnât react. Not outwardly. But her hands, resting on the table, had curled into tight fists.
âAdditionally,â the expert continued, âthe recording shows no signs of tampering or editing.â
The judge scribbled notes, then looked up.
âMs. Voss, would you like to respond?â
Clara stood slowly.
For a moment, it seemed like she might still fight itâdeny, deflect, rebuild the illusion.
But then she saw the girl.
Still there. Still watching.
And something shifted.
ââŠIt was never supposed to come out like this,â Clara said quietly.
Gasps. Real ones this time.
Mrs. Gable covered her mouth.
Clara exhaled, her shoulders droppingânot in defeat, but in surrender.
âI didnât think anyone would get hurt,â she continued. âI thought I could control it.â
âYou tried to steal an entire company,â the judge said coldly.
Clara gave a hollow laugh.
âYes. And I almost got away with it⊠if not for her.â
She nodded toward the girl.
That small, barefoot witness who had just undone everything.
The judge straightened.
âThis court will recess for final judgment.â

But everyone already knew.
The truth had arrived. And it wasnât leaving.
