### CHAPTER 1 — The Woman Across the Street

The wind moved first.

A low, restless current sweeping dust along the empty boulevard as Adrian stood frozen, the girl’s grip tightening around his sleeve like she was anchoring herself to the last solid thing in the world.

Across the street, Elena did not move.

She didn’t need to.

The faint smile on her lips lingered too long to be human—too controlled, too knowing. The key between her fingers caught the dying sunlight, glinting in perfect symmetry with the one resting against Adrian’s chest.

Adrian’s breathing slowed.

Measured. Intentional.

“Stay behind me,” he murmured, barely turning his head.

The girl shook her head violently, her voice trembling but urgent.

“She’s not here for you,” she whispered. “She’s here for it.”

Her eyes flicked downward—to the lighter.

Adrian’s grip instinctively tightened around the tarnished metal. It felt heavier now. Warmer. Like it had been waiting.

Across the street, Elena finally moved.

One step.

Then another.

Not toward them—but diagonally, drifting into the shadow cast by the bus shelter frame. As if she were aligning herself with something unseen.

Adrian’s pulse spiked.

“She wants us to follow,” he said.

The girl’s fingers dug deeper into his coat.

“No,” she whispered. “She wants you to remember.”

A flicker of something—distant, fractured—crossed Adrian’s mind.

A room.

Firelight.

Two keys.

And a voice saying: “If one turns, the other must answer.”

He exhaled slowly.

“Then we don’t follow,” he said.

But Elena stopped—and for the first time, her expression changed.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Recognition.

Then she raised the key
and turned it in the air.

A soft, metallic click echoed—

From nowhere.

And everywhere.

The streetlights flickered on.

All at once
