Chapter 2: The Hidden Pattern

That evening, Matthew didnât go to meetings.
He didnât take calls.
Instead, he stood in Lilyâs room while she slept, the crushed bottle sitting on his desk under a warm lamp.
The boyâs words repeated in his mind.
âHe keeps this one separate.â
Matthew opened his laptop.
Security footage.
Night after night.
And then he saw it.
A shadowed figure near the back gateâsame time, same movement pattern. Always avoiding cameras. Always carrying black bags.
Always leaving one behind.
Matthew leaned closer to the screen.
Zoomed in.
The man wasnât just stealing.
He was sorting.
Separating.
Protecting something inside the system he was breaking.
Matthew whispered, almost to himself:
âWhy would someone steal everything⊠except her medication?â
A soft knock interrupted him.
Lily stood at the door, wrapped in a blanket.
âI couldnât sleep,â she said quietly.
Matthew closed the laptop immediately, forcing calm into his voice.
âCome here.â
She walked toward him slowly, fragile but steady.
âI think the boy is telling the truth,â she whispered.
Matthew looked at her.
