CHAPTER 1 â âAFTER THE SILENCEâ

The training ground remained quiet long after the dogâs explosive reunion faded into stillness.
The young US soldier stayed kneeling, arms wrapped tightly around the service dog as if letting go would break something irreversible. The dogâs breathing was heavy at first, then slowly steadied, its body pressing closer as if confirming reality through touch alone.
Behind them, the line of soldiers remained disciplined, but something had shiftedâsubtle changes in posture, softened eyes, the kind of silence that no longer felt empty, but respectful.
The officer stepped forward slowly, boots pressing into the dry ground.
âStand down formation,â he ordered quietly.
No one moved for a moment.
Then, one by one, the soldiers relaxed their stance.
May you like
The dog finally pulled back just enough to look at the soldierâs face again. Its stare was no longer distant or trainedâit was searching, recognizing, remembering.
And then it sat down, refusing to leave his side.
