Chapter 1: The Impossible Recognition

The silence in the restaurant thickened, pressing against every breath.
Emily felt it firstâthe shift. Conversations faded into whispers. Glasses paused midair. All eyes were now on the elegant woman trembling before her.
âMaâam⊠are you alright?â Emily asked softly.
Eleanor stepped closer instead of answering. Her gaze never left Emilyâs wrist.
âThat markâŠâ Eleanor whispered, her voice breaking. âYou said youâve had it since you were a baby?â
Emily nodded, uneasy now. âYes. My adoptive parents told me I was found outside a clinic when I was an infant. Why?â
The word adoptive struck Eleanor like thunder.
Her knees nearly gave out, and she grabbed the edge of the table for support. Twenty-three years of grief surged to the surface all at once.
âMy daughterâŠâ Eleanor said, her voice trembling uncontrollably. âShe had that exact mark. Same shape. Same place.â
Emily froze.
âThatâs⊠not possible,â she said, but her voice lacked conviction.
Eleanor shook her head slowly, tears spilling freely now. âThey told me she died in a fire. I held an empty coffin. I buried a future that never had a chance.â
A murmur rippled through the restaurant.
Emilyâs heart began to race.
âMaâam⊠what are you saying?â
May you like
Eleanor reached outâbut stopped just short of touching her.
âIâm saying⊠you might be my daughter.â
