CHAPTER 1 — The Name That Broke the Room

The silence didn’t end when Lily spoke.

It deepened.

Victor Sterling’s fingers tightened around the photograph as if it might dissolve if he loosened his grip. His eyes moved back and forth across the faded image—the sculptor, the signature, the unmistakable mark burned into the corner.

A name the world had buried.

A name he had buried.

Across the room, the Artist struggled to steady himself, one hand gripping the edge of a marble pedestal. His earlier arrogance had evaporated completely, replaced by something raw and exposed.

“No,” he muttered under his breath. “That’s not possible.”

Lily didn’t move. Her breathing stayed calm, but her chest rose just a little higher now.

Victor finally looked up at her.

“You’re lying,” he said quietly—but there was no force behind it.

Lily shook her head once. “I grew up watching him work. I know every line he ever carved.”

She stepped closer to the unfinished sculpture.

“And this?” she added, lightly touching the air near its center. “This is wrong. He would never force balance. He let the material decide.”

A murmur spread through the guests. Subtle. Controlled. But undeniable.

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“Everyone out,” he said, without raising his voice.

No one argued.

Within seconds, the gallery emptied—heels clicking, whispers trailing, doors closing softly until only three people remained beneath the dim golden light.

Victor, Lily
 and the Artist.

Victor exhaled slowly.

“If what you’re saying is true,” he said, “then your father didn’t vanish.”

Lily met his gaze.

May you like

“No,” she said. “He was erased.”

And for the first time in decades, Victor Sterling looked afraid.
