CHAPTER 3 â A DIFFERENT BEGINNING

Three months later, the air felt lighter.
Not because everything had been forgottenâ
But because everything had been faced.
The case against Daniel had moved quickly. Attempted poisoning. Fraud. Conspiracy.
Claire had testified.
Not out of courage, at firstâbut out of necessity.
But somewhere along the way, the truth had changed her too.
Emily didnât attend the final hearing.
She didnât need closure from a courtroom.
She had already found it elsewhere.
A small café.
Morning light.
No chandeliers.
No audience.
Just quiet.
She sat by the window, dressed simply nowâno lace, no pretense.
The waitress walked inâthis time not in uniform.
Her name was Anna.
They had met a few times since that night.
Not out of obligation.
But something more natural.
âHey,â Anna said, sliding into the seat across from her.
âHey.â
A pauseâbut a comfortable one.
âYou look⊠different,â Anna said.
Emily smiled slightly.
âI feel different.â
They sat for a moment, watching people pass by outside.
Normal life.
Unscripted.
Uncontrolled.
Real.
âI used to think everything had to be perfect,â Emily said. âThe right dress. The right man. The right moment.â
Anna tilted her head.
âAnd now?â
Emily looked out the window, then back.
âNow I think⊠it just has to be honest.â
Anna smiled.
âThatâs harder.â
Emily nodded.
âBut better.â
A server brought their coffee.
Steam curled upward between them.
Soft. Quiet. Alive.
Emily wrapped her hands around the cup.
Not to steady herselfâ
But simply because she could.
No cameras.
No expectations.
No performance.
Just her.
And for the first time in a long timeâ
That was enough.
She took a sip.
And smiled.
Not the kind of smile meant for photographsâ
But the kind that doesnât need anyone watching.
May you like
A real beginning.
Finally.
