CHAPTER 1: THE THREAD OF TRUTH

The laughter died first.
It didn’t fade naturally—it snapped, like a thread pulled too tight.
The old janitor stood in the center of the grand hall, her trembling fingers still clutching the faded photograph. The billionaire—Adrian Voss—stared at it as if it might burn him.
His mother.
Wearing that dress.
The exact one displayed behind glass like a museum relic.
“That’s… not possible,” Adrian said, his voice quieter now, stripped of the arrogance that had filled the room moments before.
The guests shifted uncomfortably. No one dared speak.
The old woman swallowed, her voice fragile but steady. “I made it… thirty-five years ago. Your mother came to my shop. She said she didn’t want something expensive… she wanted something meaningful.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened. “My mother bought all her dresses from Europe.”
The woman shook her head slowly. “No. Not that one. She came alone. No driver, no guards. Just a woman who wanted to feel… seen.”
Adrian felt something unfamiliar press against his chest.
Doubt.
He stepped closer. “What was her name?”
The old woman smiled faintly, eyes glistening. “Elena. But she asked me to call her Ellie.”
The nickname hit him like a punch.
No one knew that.
No one except him… and her.
The room felt smaller. Suffocating.
“Why are you here?” he asked, his voice almost a whisper now.
She looked down at her worn shoes. “Because I lost everything. My shop burned down years ago. I thought… maybe I could just see it one last time. Something I created. Something that mattered.”
Silence.
Adrian turned slowly toward the glass case.
That dress—his prized possession, his symbol of wealth—suddenly felt like something else.
A memory he never truly understood.

And a story he had never cared to ask.
Until now.
