CHAPTER 2: The Weight of Choice

Guests began whisperingâsoft at first, then building like distant rain.
Andrew ran a hand through his hair, pacing once before stopping in front of Clara.
âWhy didnât you tell me?â he asked, his voice low, almost pleading.
Clara studied himânot with anger, but with clarity.
âWould it have changed anything?â she asked.
Andrew hesitated.
That hesitation was the answer.
Clara nodded faintly. âThatâs what I thought.â
Patricia stepped forward, trying to regain control. âAndrew, weâre leaving. This is absurd.â
But her voice lacked its earlier sharpness. It cracked at the edges.
The venue manager remained still, respectfully silent.
Clara gently closed the briefcase.
âNo,â she said softly. âNo one needs to leave.â
She turned, addressing the roomânot loudly, but with a presence that drew every eye.
âThis wedding⊠was meant to celebrate love. Not status. Not approval.â
Her gaze flicked briefly to Andrew.
âI was willing to build something real.â
A beat.
âBut real things require courage.â
Andrew swallowed hard. âClara⊠Iââ
She raised a hand slightly. Not to silence him harshlyâbut to stop something that had already come too late.
âI donât need an apology shaped by pressure,â she said. âI needed partnership.â

The distance between them felt final now.
Not dramatic. Just⊠decided.
