Chapter 2: What Cannot Be Hidden

The study door remained open behind them, a silent accusation.

Arthur guided Julian a few steps away, kneeling just enough to meet his eye level. He didn’t rush him. Didn’t interrogate.

“Did she hurt you?” Arthur asked quietly.

Julian shook his head.

A pause.

Then, barely audible—

“I was scared.”

Arthur closed his eyes briefly.

That was enough.

He stood again, turning—finally—toward Victoria.

The distance between them was only a few steps, but it felt like an ocean.

Victoria tried to compose herself. Her posture straightened, her chin lifted slightly, as if dignity alone could undo what had happened.

“It wasn’t what you think,” she said, her voice controlled but trembling underneath. “He ran into the study, I thought—”

“You thought what?” Arthur interrupted, not raising his voice.

That was what made it worse.

Victoria faltered.

“I thought he needed to calm down,” she said. “It was loud. Overwhelming. I only meant to—”

“Lock him in the dark?” Arthur finished.

Silence.

Victoria’s eyes flickered—not with arrogance now, but with something unfamiliar.

Regret.

Clara stepped closer to Julian, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. The boy leaned into her instinctively.

Arthur noticed.

Everything.

“You don’t get to decide what my son needs,” Arthur said, his voice low, controlled, final.

Victoria swallowed.

For the first time that evening, she looked smaller.

Not physically.

But undeniably.

“I made a mistake,” she said, almost to herself.

Arthur held her gaze.

“Yes,” he replied. “You did.”

May you like

But there was something else in his eyes now—not just anger.

Decision.
