Chapter 1: The Silence After the Fall

The sound of breaking glass lingered far longer than it should have.

No one moved.

The ballroom—moments ago alive with laughter, clinking crystal, and polite ambition—had collapsed into a suffocating stillness. Every gaze fixed on the same impossible scene.

The little girl held onto the maid’s apron as if it were the only real thing in the world.

“Mommy.”

No hesitation. No doubt.

The woman in the maid’s uniform stood frozen, her fingers trembling at her sides. Her breath came shallow, uneven, as if her body remembered something her mind was still trying to deny.

His wife had been gone for three years.

Buried.

Mourned.

Grieved in silence.

Yet here she stood—alive, breathing, afraid.

“
It’s me.”

The words barely existed, a whisper lost between reality and memory.

A murmur rippled through the guests, but no one dared speak.

The future bride beside him said nothing.

For the first time that evening, she stepped back.
