🎬 CHAPTER 1 — “The Silence Breaks”

The ballroom does not move for a full three seconds after Erin speaks.

No one claps. No one breathes loudly. Even the chandeliers seem louder than the people beneath them.

Then—slowly—a murmur begins.

Erin stands at the microphone, still calm, still controlled, the red handprint on her cheek now impossible to ignore under the golden lights. Her eyes do not shake.

Mike Dugan steps half a pace forward, forcing a smile that no longer fits his face.

Mike (low, controlled):

“This is not the forum for operational debates.”

Erin turns her head slightly toward him.

Not angry. Not emotional.

Precise.

Erin:

“It became the forum the moment people stopped telling the truth.”

A retired fire captain in the back of the room shifts in his seat. Then another veteran firefighter stands. Then another.

The silence begins to fracture.

Mike’s sister tries to speak again, but no one is listening to her anymore.

Erin reaches into a small folder carried under her arm. She places a single document on the podium.

Stamped. Dated. Classified.

Erin:

“I didn’t come here to accuse anyone.”

A pause.

Erin (firm):

“I came here to restore what was buried with six names on it.”

The word six lands heavier than anything before it.

The ballroom doors open slightly as staff rush in—but no one stops them anymore.

The truth has already entered the room.
