CHAPTER 1: THE MAN IN THE CAR

The man stepped out of the black SUV slowly, his eyes never leaving Mariana’s face.
Up close, he looked even more striking—silver hair, sharp features, and a presence that commanded quiet respect. But what unsettled Mariana most was not his appearance.
It was the way he looked at her.
Not with pity.
With recognition.
“I’m sorry,” Mariana said quickly, wiping her tears. “I didn’t mean to—”
“Mariana Alvarez,” he interrupted softly.
Her breath caught.
“How do you know my name?”
The man exhaled, as if holding onto something heavy for years. “Because I’ve been looking for you… for a very long time.”
Everything inside her froze.
“My name is Alexander Hayes,” he continued. “And… I believe I’m your father.”
The world tilted.
Mariana stumbled back, shaking her head. “No… that’s not possible. My parents—”
“Your mother never told you,” he said gently. “She disappeared before I even knew she was pregnant. I searched for years. When I saw you just now…” His voice broke slightly. “You look exactly like her.”
Mariana’s mind raced. Her mother had always avoided questions about the past. There had been gaps. Silence. Secrets.
And now this.
“I know this is overwhelming,” Alexander said, stepping closer but keeping his distance. “But you’re not alone anymore. Not if you don’t want to be.”
For the first time that day… someone was offering her something without conditions.
Not judgment.
Not blame.
Just… presence.
Her hand instinctively moved to her stomach.
“I’m pregnant,” she whispered.
Alexander’s eyes softened instantly. “Then we have even more reason to make sure you’re safe.”
Tears fell again—but this time, they were different.
Not from loss.
From the fragile beginning of hope.
“Come with me,” he said. “Let me take care of you.”

After everything she had just lost… Mariana made a choice that would change everything.
She nodded.
