CHAPTER 3: THE HERO

The lockdown intensified.
Every exit was sealed. Officers scanned the crowds, comparing faces, watching for any sign of panic⊠or escape.
And thenâ
Rex moved.
His ears snapped forward, body going rigid.
âRex?â Brooks stood immediately.
The dog took off down the corridor.
âHey! Rexâheel!â Brooks shouted, sprinting after him.
The Shepherd ignored the command.
Because he had already found the scent.
Through the crowd, past security lines, straight toward a man walking too quickly toward an emergency exit.
Gray jacket.
Brooksâ heart pounded. âSTOP!â
The man bolted.
People screamed as he shoved past travelers, knocking over luggage in a desperate attempt to flee.
But Rex was faster.
In a blur of muscle and precision, the Shepherd lungedâ
And this time, he did bite.
He clamped onto the manâs arm, dragging him to the ground with controlled force.
Officers swarmed in seconds, restraining the suspect as he struggled violently.
âGet him cuffed!â Brooks shouted.
The man was secured.
The threat was over.
Hours later, the airport slowly returned to life.
Passengers reentered. Flights resumed. The chaos faded into whispered conversations and shaken relief.
Near Gate 14, the little boy sat beside his mother, wrapped in a blanket.
Rex approached slowly.
The child hesitated⊠then reached out.
The Shepherd gently nudged his hand.
âYou saved me,â the boy whispered.
Brooks smiled softly. âNo, buddy⊠he did.â
The mother wiped tears from her eyes. âI didnât even see it happening⊠Thank you. Both of you.â
Brooks shook his head. âThank him.â
Rex wagged his tail.
For the first time all day, the terminal felt safe again.
And in the middle of all the noise, all the fear, and all the chaosâŠ
