Chapter Two: The Sound That Changed Everything

Logan picked Noah up without another word.
The boy clung to him instantly, burying his face into Logan’s shoulder, small fingers gripping his jacket like it was the only solid thing in the world.
“I’m taking him upstairs,” Logan said.
Vanessa’s voice followed, low and sharp. “You’re making a scene.”
Logan didn’t turn around.
For once, he didn’t care.
The grand staircase curved upward, away from the noise, away from the lights, away from expectations.
Each step felt like distance from something he should have left behind a long time ago.
Inside the private suite, the silence settled quickly.
Soft. Real.
Noah’s breathing slowed.
Logan sat on the edge of the bed, holding him, saying nothing. Just staying.
Minutes passed.
Then—
Something unexpected happened.
A small sound.
Barely there.
So quiet Logan almost thought he imagined it.
“…da…”
Logan froze.
He pulled back slightly, searching Noah’s face.
The boy’s eyes were still wet, still uncertain—but now they were focused.
Present.
“Hey,” Logan whispered. “It’s okay.”
Noah’s lips trembled.
“…da…”
This time, clearer.
Not perfect.
Not practiced.
But real.
Logan felt something break open inside his chest.
Not pain.
Something deeper.
Relief.
Two years.
Two years of waiting.
And the first word came not in therapy rooms or structured exercises—
But in a moment of safety.
In silence.
In trust.
Logan pressed his forehead gently against Noah’s.
“I’ve got you,” he said softly. “I’m here.”
May you like
And for the first time—
Noah believed it enough to speak.
