Chapter Two: The Door That Opened

Emma’s home wasn’t far.
A warm yellow light glowed from the windows of a small but beautiful townhouse at the end of the street.
To Lina, it looked like another world.
She stopped at the gate.
“I… I can’t go in there,” she said, pulling back slightly.
Emma frowned. “Why not?”
“I’m dirty,” Lina whispered. “They’ll get mad.”
Emma shook her head immediately. “No, they won’t.”
But Lina didn’t move.
So Emma did something unexpected.
She tightened her grip and said, “Then if they get mad, they’ll have to be mad at me too.”
And before Lina could protest—
Emma pulled her through the gate.
The front door opened before they even knocked.
A woman stood there, elegant but gentle, her expression shifting from curiosity… to shock.
“Emma?” she said. “Where have you—”
Then she saw Lina.
For a second, the world held its breath.
Lina instinctively stepped back, ready to run.
She had seen that look before.
The moment people decided she didn’t belong.
But Emma stepped forward instead.
“She was freezing,” Emma said quickly. “She hasn’t eaten. I gave her bread. Can she stay? Please?”
The woman didn’t answer right away.
Her eyes moved over Lina—the torn clothes, the hollow cheeks, the fear.
Then something softened.
Not pity.
Something deeper.
“Come inside,” she said quietly.
Lina froze.
“Are… are you sure?” she asked.
The woman stepped aside, opening the door wider.
“No child should have to ask that,” she replied.

And just like that—
Lina stepped into warmth for the first time in what felt like forever.
