Chapter 1: The Question She Was Afraid to Answer

Millie’s silence stretched between us like something fragile that could shatter at the slightest pressure.

I didn’t push her.

Instead, I gently sat beside her on the cold tile floor, keeping just enough distance so she wouldn’t feel cornered. My heart was racing, but my voice stayed steady.

“You’re safe with me,” I whispered.

Her small fingers twisted the fabric of her dress. Then, barely audible, she asked,
“Daddy… do I really have to apologize?”

The question hit me harder than anything else.

“Apologize? For what, sweetheart?”

She hesitated. Her lip trembled.

“Aunt Carol said I was being bad… and that I needed to say sorry.”

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

“Aunt Carol did this?” I asked carefully, glancing at the mark on her cheek.

Millie didn’t answer directly. But she didn’t need to. Her silence said enough.

I took a slow breath, fighting the anger rising inside me.

“You didn’t do anything wrong,” I said firmly. “And you don’t have to apologize for something you didn’t do.”

Her eyes flickered with confusion—like she wasn’t sure she was allowed to believe me.

And that’s when I realized this wasn’t just about one moment.

This was something deeper.
