CHAPTER 3: A NEW BEGINNING

Three months later, the world looked very different.

The Hale name no longer carried power.

Margaret faced charges.

And my husband…

He tried.

Calls. Messages. Apologies that came too late.

I didn’t answer.

Because some things don’t deserve a second chance.

But my daughter?

She was smiling again.

And that was all that mattered.

We moved to a quieter place.

A smaller home.

But warmer.

Safer.

Ours.

One afternoon, as sunlight filled the living room, she looked up at me and asked softly,

“Mom… are we okay now?”

I knelt beside her, brushing a strand of hair from her face.

“We’re more than okay,” I said gently.

“We’re free.”

She smiled.

A real smile this time.

The kind that doesn’t carry fear behind it.

The kind every child deserves.

And as I held her close, I realized something I hadn’t understood before—

That night didn’t destroy our lives.

It saved us from the wrong one.

And for the first time in years…

I felt at peace.
