Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.

The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,

casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast.

Pink balloons trembled beneath the warm air vents, and every smiling guest seemed to be waiting for Jennifer Mercer to obey her husband.

Daniel leaned close enough for his breath to touch her ear.

His navy suit still looked perfect, but a pulse jumped wildly beneath his blue tie.

"Hurry up. Everyone's looking."

Jennifer rested one hand against the waist of her red dress and studied him without blinking.

For seven years, Daniel had mistaken her patience for blindness.

Tonight, he would finally understand the difference.

"You pay it."

Her voice was low, cold, and perfectly steady.

"It's not my child's party."

The smile vanished from his face.

At the center of the ballroom, a seven-year-old girl named Olivia stood beside a towering strawberry cake while guests sang the last uncertain notes of "Happy Birthday."

Olivia's mother, Vanessa Cole, froze with a silver cake knife in her hand.

Vanessa had been introduced to everyone as Daniel's widowed college friend.

Jennifer knew her as the woman whose messages filled a hidden phone in Daniel's office safe.

Daniel caught Jennifer's wrist beneath the tablecloth.

"Do not embarrass that child because you're jealous."

Jennifer looked down at his fingers until he released her.

"The child is the only innocent person in this room."

She rose, crossed the polished floor, and placed a tan leather folder on the clear glass table beside the cake.

The soft slap of leather against glass silenced even the waiters.

At the nearest table, Jennifer's father, Robert Hale, leaned forward in his dark suit.

Beside him, Ellen Hale pressed one hand against the pearls resting over her light blue dress.

"Jennifer, what is that?"

Daniel stared at the folder, and terror spread across his face with such naked speed that several guests noticed.

Jennifer opened the brass clasp.

The first page held a photograph of Daniel and Vanessa kissing outside a private medical clinic.

The second showed a series of payments from Jennifer's family company to a shell corporation named Blue Finch Events.

The third page was a laboratory report.

Jennifer lifted it high enough for Daniel, Vanessa, and her parents to read the bold line at the bottom.

Probability of paternity: 99.9998 percent.

Robert rose so abruptly that his chair struck the marble behind him.

Ellen's face drained of color.

Across the room, Vanessa lowered the knife.

Daniel forced out a laugh that sounded thin and broken.

"A copied document proves nothing."

"Then perhaps the original will."

Jennifer removed a sealed evidence envelope bearing the name of an accredited laboratory.

Daniel reached for it.

She pulled it beyond his grasp.

"You used my company to pay for your mistress's daughter's birthday."

"You charged one hundred eighty-six thousand dollars to an account requiring my signature."

"Then you brought the authorization here because you thought public pressure would make me sign."

Murmurs rolled through the ballroom.

Olivia looked from Daniel to her mother, confusion replacing the joy on her small face.

Jennifer closed the folder before the child could see the photographs.

Daniel's panic hardened into rage.

"You have no idea what you've just done."

"I know exactly what I've done."

Jennifer turned the folder over.

Taped beneath it was a small black device flashing a green light.

"I've recorded every word you've said since you arrived."

Daniel's eyes moved toward the ballroom doors.

They opened before he could run.

Two uniformed officers stepped inside, followed by a woman holding a warrant.

Yet the warrant was not addressed to Daniel.

The detective looked directly at Jennifer.

"Mrs. Mercer, we need to speak with you about four million dollars missing from Hale Holdings."
